How is your 2013 going?

Welcome to Sarksap 2.1. As of June 20th 2012 the site has been rebuilt using the Zend Framework. This is something I had been wanting to do for a while and it's now finally a reality. It is my biggest exposure to an MVC framework yet and I enjoyed doing it. The backend changes may be transparent to you, but you have surely noticed that the site looks different as well. I did this because a good web site should occasionally update its interface to keep things fresh. The site now uses a liquid layout instead of a fixed-width layout. The width of the site will resize if you change your browser window width, up to a minimum and maximum limit. Everything will behave the same way as it did before, but code is now much more organized on the back end, and you can enjoy this new user interface and color scheme. This new organization of code will allow me to update the site more frequently. I know I haven't been updating as much as I did before, but I will start back up now. Look for more articles, games, quizzes and rants coming up.

  Uncharted 3 Co-op Tips -

Uncharted 3 Co-op Tips

If you haven't played Uncharted 3, you are missing out on an incredible gaming experience. This game has it all - a great story, action, fun, and an overall very polished game. Uncharted 2 was the first in the series to introduce an online game mode. This third installment improves upon that experience in every way. While the single player adventure is the main attraction, the online multiplayer mode is the reason I am still playing this game. In this article I will share with you some of the techniques I use to successfully complete co-op games. This includes adventure and arena. I don't play much competitive yet, so I can't help there, although some of these co-op tips translate well to other modes like competitive.

  Sarksap 2.1 -

Sarksap 2.1

The new and improved Sarksap 2.1 is finally here. In this article I will go into detail about what the changes are and what you can expect. The biggest difference is that I'm using Zend Framework now. I have completely rewritten the back end code to make use of this framework. The result is a much more organized code base that is much easier to to modify or expand. I've greatly reduced the amount of clutter and the site seems a little more lightweight now, with the obvious exception that the actual framework must be included. For more information about Zend Framework, here is the official web site.

  Blackjack Game -

Blackjack Game

Here is a blackjack game I have made completely in JavaScript. Only two images are used, and they're for the board and card backgrounds. No flash or unnecessary plugins - just clean JavaScript, HTML and CSS. The standard blackjack rules apply: dealer hits on soft 17 and blackjacks pay 1.5:1. Unfortunately I was not able to implement splitting or insurance as these are more involved features. I have fixed as many bugs as I could find before this initial release, but I will admit there are still some bugs. This is version 1.1 (doubling down was added on 11/20).

  Binary/Decimal Converter -

Binary/Decimal Converter

Here is a tool that will convert between binary and decimal numbers. You can input a binary number such as 100110 and it will output it as a decimal number, and vice versa. This comes in handy sometimes, especially for computer science students. It does have limits, such as a max/min value you can input. I would've liked to have included a hexadecimal/octal converter as well but maybe I will create another tool to do this in the future. Hope you find it useful.

  Movie Review Roundup 1 -

Movie Review Roundup 1

This is the first of a series of short movie reviews that I will post occasionally. Lately I have been catching up on the great movies that I missed over the previous years, and I will post my opinions on some of them here. Each one of these articles will contain anywhere from 3 to 10 small reviews at a time. I will use a 10-point rating scale like IMDB. Although I previously wrote that such a rating scale should average to a 5, it might not be the case here. This is because when choosing a movie to watch, I select one from lists of movies that are highly regarded, so I will rate most of them above a 5/10.

  Two Keyboards Compared -

Two Keyboards Compared

When choosing among keyboards, several factors come into consideration. Do you want an LED-backlit keyboard? One with quiet/loud/short/tall keys? How about extra features like macros and USB/audio ports? These factors help decide my choice in keyboards. With the conception of Project Bloomfield I went with the Razer Lycosa. But one year later I felt it was time to move on to the Logitech Illuminated Keyboard. In this article I will compare the two and reflect on my choice. I will refer to the Logitech one as the LIK and the Razer Lycosa as simply the Lycosa.

  Computer Acronyms Quiz -

Computer Acronyms Quiz

The world of computers and technology is filled with acronyms. Some are well known like RAM and PC while others like XSLT are obscure to the average user and are known only by IT professionals. Here is your chance to test your knowledge of such acronyms. Like the US cities quiz, you will enter your answers in the text box and once you have entered what an acronym stands for, the appropriate acronym will be filled below. You don't have to worry about capitalization, but you must spell everything correctly. You have 7 minutes to name all of them.

  Sarksap 2.0 -

Sarksap 2.0

Notice anything new? You are viewing the new Sarksap, officially called Sarksap 2.0. The site has undergone a major renovation on both the front end and the back end. I have moved on from XHTML to HTML5, featuring a new design as you can tell. There have also been many changes to the back end code including updates to the database architecture and dramatically improved PHP. The features of the site are mostly unchanged - it still consists of categorized articles. But the front end design and back end code are fresh. Here are some details on exactly what has changed.

  Lights Out Game -

Lights Out Game

Can you put out all the lights? This is the classic Lights Out game in JavaScript form. Click on a light to switch it and all its surrounding squares to their opposite state - if it is on, it will turn off, and vice versa. You have won the game when you have turned all the lights off. You can use the left panel to change the colors of the game, to change the size of the grid, or to start fresh with a new puzzle. High score functionality will be added in the future.

  Commonly Confused Words -

Commonly Confused Words

There is a big problem going on in America. Due to the popularity of social networking, instant messaging, and texting, people are forgetting things they learned in first grade. When two people are speaking to each other verbally, there is no problem because two words may sound alike and they receive the benefit of the doubt in that the other person assumes they are thinking of the right word. However, if this conversation were taking place on, say Facebook for example, the person's though process is visible, and the exact words they are using become exposed.

  Project Bloomfield -

Project Bloomfield

It is finally a reality. After months of planning, buying, building and setting up, my project of building a new gaming/coding rig is complete. I named the project after the name of the architecture of my CPU. I will go through each component in lengthy detail so unless you're a total nerd you may want to skip this one. This will be my primary computer now and I will be using it for working on my site and gaming. I will keep my laptop for mobile computing. So here is a list of all the parts along with their details and my opinions.
